How can I deal with homesickness ?
Being homesick is a common feeling people experience even if they’re just away for a few days. However, homesickness should not ruin your vacation or trip. To avoid feeling homesick whenever you go on a trip, here are some useful tips you can do:
1) Bring your loved ones – If you need to go on a trip alone, you should carry pictures of your friends, family or pets while traveling. This way, even if you don’t usually get homesick, but eventually do, you have their pictures to make you smile. If you miss your kids, parents or friends, you can always call them up wherever you are as long as you have all contact information with you.
2) Understand what you’re feeling is natural – Most people experience homesickness when separated from their loved ones or familiar surroundings. Once you understand that you may become homesick every once in a while as long as you’re away, you can find ways to enjoy your travel without getting depressed.
3) Prepare for your trip – Before leaving places, talk with your friends and family about what gifts they’d like you to bring home for them. This can help you when you’re sightseeing alone or traveling a strange place, since you can collect items and photos that would remind you of the people back home and give them as gifts when you return.
4) Make a second home – If you’ll be staying at a strange place for a few months or a year, establish a good home base, such as a coffee shop or restaurant where you can meet new people. Create a daily routine, such as morning exercise, lunch at your favorite local restaurant, stroll around the city, call people back home and other daily rituals you may find enjoyment.
Remember that your friends and loved ones are only a call or e-mail away. Whenever you feel like going back home, but you can’t, all you need to do is contact them to feel secure. Don’t let homesickness ruin your trip; the world is a great place to see, enjoy every minute of your trip.
