To many, a cruise ship vacation seems like a luxury indeed, what more when advertisements and flyers and even movies portray cruise liners are something luxurious for the wealthy traveller. Naturally, many families would be mindful of the costs involved in planning a cruise vacation. Is it really true that cruise ship vacations are only within the reach of the rich and famous or is it not all that expensive? In this article, we will explore the various factors which can determine the cost of your cruise ship vacation.
The first thing you should do is to consider where you want to go. Once you are keen on a particular destination, then look around for the available cruise liners or cruise ships plying the destination or route you are interested in. Compare the different cruise liners and their offered package. Find out whether it is an all-inclusive cruise ship package as this option will mean that many items are already factored into the pricing and you need not pay for them separately.
Though you have already made up your mind on your chosen destination for the cruise, you need to ask yourself where the cruise liner will depart from and where will it finally disembark. You will need to make additional travel arrangements in case the departure port is located a distance away from your home or if the final post of disembarkation is far away. Would you be travelling by air or bus or train to get to the ports? Or would self-drive be preferred? What would the cost of this additional travelling be?
Where all-inclusive cruise liners are chosen, the cost of food, drinks and entertainment are usually included but it is best practice to inquire what is included in these all-inclusive packages. What kind of food or drinks are included? What kind of entertainment is included? If an all-inclusive package is not available or the items included are inadequate to satisfy your needs, you may then have to estimate how much more you need to spend to make your cruise ship vacation fulfilling.
Most cruise ships offer free use of onboard entertainment and information on the facilities and entertainment are usually available through brochures, websites or even from your travel agents. Popular onboard entertainment may include watching a movie, a live performance or taking lessons in pastime. Other forms of entertainment or leisure may include artificial rock climbing, dance lessons, arts and craft, gymnasium, sauna and swimming. Not casinos though. If you are into gambling and the cruise liner offers gambling facilities through their onboard casino, you will have to re-estimate your cost of vacation.
Finally, if you are a collector of souvenirs, you should also make provisions for purchase of souvenirs and gifts not only onboard the cruise ship but also at the ports of call. Some cruise liners dock at ports for half a day or more to enable the passengers to explore on-land and if you are keen in shopping, you better make sure you bring extra cash along.
