How long will take me to travel from one end of America to another?
Hi there, Im busy planning my itenary for next year and I will be arriving in New York and hope to travel by train across the country to LA for my second flight, taking in all the sights along the way? I need to be book a date for my flight in LA as Im booking a round the world trip, and was wondering how long you all suggest I give from the dat I arrive in New York (a few days sightseeing) to the day I should arrive in LA. Thankyou all!

The train trip itself will be approximately 2-3 days, including an 8 hour layover in Chicago. I did the train trip several times between Pittsburgh, PA and Flagstaff, AZ, and travel time was almost exactly 2 days, so NY to LA will add about 1/2 to 1 day traveling time.
If you do the train you will love it. You get to really see the country, and if you want you could stop at any of the cities along the way and then join the train again. Chicago is a great place. There are lots of great museums in Pittsburgh.
Other stops along the way include St. Louis, Kansas City, and Albuquerque. Flagstaff would enable you to make a side trip to the Grand Canyon.
Enjoy the trip.

I would spend 3 to 5 days in New York and then make your way to LA. I have been to NY 3 times and spent 5 days there each time. It is amazing and there is so much to do and see but being “the city that nevers sleeps” it is ever so noisy and you dont really seem to get a peaceful nights sleep that you dont want to stay too long.
Bon voyage!

At least a few days, but it really depends how often, and how long, you plan to stop enroute. For timetables and stations, see http://www.amtrak.com

Hi Chris, if you have the time, money and inclination take no less than 3 months, and preferably 6 to 12 months. There’s so much to do, see, savour and enjoy that some places you visit you’ll just want to stay longer than in others.
Rushing about travelling is exhausting, regardless of your age and fitness level – and you’ll miss a lot of stuff too.
