How do I make a travel itinerary ?

Organizing a trip not only saves time, but also saves you a lot of money. Even if you’re just going to the beach on a nearby city, planning your travel makes everything easier.

The first thing you need to do is get a piece of paper or open a document on your computer, then create a structure that you personally like, may it be a chart, bulleted list or numbered form. Make a header on the top of your page, describing all the important details of your trip, including the destination, duration of travel, exact dates and transportation details. It is always a good idea to know your flight time or travel dates to avoid missing a flight.

Depending on your choice, you can divide the itinerary by time of day or day. People with five or more activities planned would benefit from listing down plans by time of day, so if you have three plans in the morning of September 1, list down – “Monday, September 1, 2008, 9:00 am”. Else, you can just divide the day with “morning, afternoon and evening”.

Use exact start times in organizing your day. If you’re on a business trip, make sure to follow your schedules strictly. However, if you’re traveling for leisure with your family or friends, you can delay a few minutes of your ‘start time’ for each activity. Nevertheless, having a time stamp on all your activities, whether you’re on a business or leisure trip, could help you tremendously. For people who prefer to travel spontaneously and an hour-by-hour itinerary may not be your thing, you can list down all the activities, destinations and events you’re interested in to maximize your trip.

Keep your guides as short and clear as possible. Make sure to create a list that your eyes would comfortably look at, since you would be using this itinerary for the duration of your trip. You should also list down important information such as phone numbers, addresses, flight confirmations, transportation routes, cab numbers and other details you may use while traveling. If you have everything listed down, you save time by not stopping over for directions or getting lost at a deserted place. You also save money because you won’t have to spend other expenses that are not on your list. To maximize your itinerary, research on eateries and restaurants on the destination so you could have a rough idea on the money to be allocated for food. Whether you plan to be spontaneous or not, an organized itinerary is a useful guide for anyone traveling on an unfamiliar location.
